The study of global affairs explores the complex interconnections between societies and nations around the world. It examines the economic, political, cultural, and environmental processes that affect all societies. Core courses provide a knowledge foundation of the major’s broad issues, such as terrorism, refugee crises, and global inequality, while students choose from a variety of thematic or regional concentrations to tailor their degrees to their interests and career goals.
Sacred Heart’s BA in Global Affairs is an ideal preparation for the challenges of our increasingly interdependent world, preparing students to be thoughtful and engaged citizens and global leaders. The interdisciplinary program includes the opportunity to develop your skills by choosing from an array of internships and global learning experiences, including study abroad opportunities.
The Global Affairs major offers a unique multidisciplinary approach to the study of international relations, global economics, political science, history and sociology, as well as a variety of foreign languages. The interdisciplinary curriculum provides the foundation needed to understand the complexity of global issues such as poverty and development, human rights and humanitarianism, global health, environmental sustainability, and foreign policy and diplomacy. Students also have the opportunity to learn about global issues through a postcolonial and critical-theoretical framework and to critique perspectives of Eurocentrism and Orientalism that remain embedded in many traditional conceptual frameworks. Students must complete a minimum of one course designated L4 in a modern language other than English, and up to two summer term or term-time study abroad courses may count toward the major requirements with DUS approval.
